New: magnetron sputtering

Custom Optical Filters, Sputtered and Diced in the UK

Kingsview Optical makes custom optical filters by magnetron sputtering at our site in Rye, East Sussex. Bandpass, notch, longpass, shortpass and dichroic filters are designed to your spectral specification, coated, diced to size and measured before they ship, with no overseas coating house in the lead time.

Why Sputtered Filters Hold Their Specification

Sputtered layers pack far more densely than evaporated ones, close to the bulk material. That density is what makes complex, many-layer filter designs practical, and what keeps them performing in the field.

Stable wavelengthDense films take up very little moisture, so the passband stays where it was designed.
Steep edges, deep blockingTight layer control makes high layer-count designs with sharp transitions possible.
Hard, durable layersBetter abrasion and environmental resistance for filters that get handled and cleaned.
One UK siteDesigned, coated, diced and measured here, so you deal with one supplier and one lead time.

Custom Optical Filters We Make

Every filter is designed around your system, not picked from a catalogue: centre wavelength, bandwidth, edge position, blocking range and angle of incidence.

Bandpass Filters

Transmit a defined window and block either side. Narrowband and broadband designs with high out-of-band rejection.

Used in: fluorescence, spectroscopy, laser-line clean-up, machine vision

Specify a bandpass filter

Notch Filters

Block a narrow band, usually a laser line, while transmitting the wavelengths either side of it.

Used in: Raman spectroscopy, laser rejection and protection, fluorescence

Specify a notch filter

Longpass Filters

Block shorter wavelengths and transmit above a defined cut-on edge, with a steep transition between the two.

Used in: emission filtering, excitation rejection, NIR imaging

Specify a longpass filter

Shortpass Filters

Transmit below a defined cut-off and block the longer wavelengths above it.

Used in: excitation filters, IR rejection, sensor and camera protection

Specify a shortpass filter

Dichroic Filters & Beamsplitters

Reflect one band and transmit another, at the angle of incidence your system uses.

Used in: multi-channel imaging, fluorescence cubes, laser combining

Specify a dichroic

Coloured Glass Filters

Schott and Hoya absorbing filter glass, CNC edged to any shape and AR coated if needed.

Used in: heat absorption, UV and IR blocking, neutral density

Coloured glass & polarising filters

Designed, Coated, Diced and Measured on One Site

All four steps happen in Rye, so there's one supplier, one purchase order and one lead time, from one-off prototypes to production batches.

Disco DAD3221 dicing saw used to dice coated optical filter wafers at Kingsview Optical
Coated wafers are diced into individual filters on our Disco dicing saw.
  1. DesignYour spectral specification is modelled in Essential Macleod before anything goes into a chamber, so the quote comes with a target curve to measure against.
  2. SputterDeposited by magnetron sputtering as dense, stable multilayers. Back-face AR coatings are added in-house if your design needs them.
  3. DiceCoated wafers are diced to your size on the Disco dicing saw for clean, chip-free edges and full clear aperture. Glass filters can also be CNC edged to complex shapes.
  4. MeasureEvery batch is measured on a Perkin-Elmer Lambda 1050+ from 175–3000nm. Measured-versus-design traces are supplied on request, and witness samples are kept for traceability.

What to Specify for a Custom Filter

You don't need all of this to start. Even a sketch of the transmission curve is enough for us to tell you whether it can be made.

Centre wavelengthOr cut-on / cut-off edge for longpass and shortpass
BandwidthFWHM, and how steep the edges need to be
BlockingWavelength range and optical density to block
TransmissionMinimum or average in the passband
Angle of incidencePlus cone angle and polarisation, if relevant
Size & substrateDimensions, thickness, and material if you have a preference
QuantityOne-off, prototype lot or repeat production
Test dataSpectral traces or certification you need supplied

Previously Bought Filters from Envin Scientific?

In 2025 Kingsview acquired Envin Scientific's sputtering chamber together with the IP for its optical filters and coatings. If you need a filter re-made, send us the part number or original drawing and we'll look it up.

Re-order a Filter

Coloured Glass & Polarising Filters

Not every application needs an interference filter. We also cut absorbing filter glass from Schott, Hoya and Isuzu to any shape and size, from micro filters up to 150mm. Send a STEP file and we'll CNC edge complex outlines, drill mounting holes, or grind wedges. Twin-lap polishing holds parallelism to better than 10 arc seconds, and filters can be AR coated to your wavelength.

Polarising filters

Polarising sheet can be cut to any shape, AR coated, or laminated between glass. Or we can apply a dielectric polarising coating directly to windows and lenses, designed for your wavelength and angle of incidence.

Getting a Quote for Custom Optical Filters

Send the spectral requirement, even as a sketch. We'll tell you honestly whether it can be made and what will drive the cost.

What to send

  • Centre wavelength or edge, bandwidth and blocking range
  • A spec curve or table, if you have one
  • Angle of incidence and filter size
  • Quantity, and whether it's a one-off or repeat
  • Any test data you need supplied

What happens next

  1. We review the requirementWithin one working day, confirming it's achievable and flagging anything that will drive cost or lead time.
  2. We model it and quoteThe quote comes with a modelled target curve to measure against.
  3. We coat, dice and verifyMade in-house and measured on the Lambda 1050+, with traces supplied if you've asked for them.

Need a Filter That Isn't in a Catalogue?

That's what the sputtering chamber is for. Send the curve you need and we'll come back with a design, a price and a lead time.

NDA-friendly. Defence and security work welcome.
